Richard C. Dart, MD, PhD
Rick Dart and family are alive and well in Denver, Colorado. After leaving my UA EM position in 1992, I became Director of the Rocky Mountain Poison & Drug Center, Denver Health and Hospital Authority. I am also Professor of Surgery (Emergency Medicine) at the University of Colorado Health and Sciences Center.
The intervening years have gone extremely well both personally and professionally. Most importantly, Katie Hurlbut, also an UA EM graduate, provided informed consent to become married and we now have three children; Marina (age 10), Chiara (age 8), and Areli (age 5). The kids keep us young even though we seem to feel older.
Katie and I are committed to the mission of Denver Health to provide indigent care for Denver. Despite being a very involved mother, Katie still works in the Denver Health ED (where the residents have elected her Best Teacher) and is the medical editor for POISINDEX.
I have been very fortunate to be recognized for my efforts with commendations from the US FDA, the American College of Medical Toxicology, the University of Colorado and Denver Health. My research interests include the development of orphan antidotes (antivenoms, acetylcysteine, hydroxocobalamin and others), the stocking of antidotes, various aspects of OTC analgesic toxicity and their treatments and adverse drug event reporting. My current efforts have focused on the development of the RADARS® System (www.radars.org), a national surveillance system to detect the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs as well as my duties as president of the Denver Health Medical Staff.
Academically, I have edited two books: The 5-Minute Toxicology Consult and the 3rd edition of Medical Toxicology, and published approximately 200 papers, chapters, reviews, etc. I am an Associate Editor for Annals of Emergency Medicine.
