Department of Emergency Medicine
The Department of Emergency Medicine at The University of Arizona College of Medicine is close to 40 faculty members strong. As part of University Medical Center (UMC)’s Level One trauma center, and the University Physicians Hospital at Kino Campus, the Emergency Department sees more than 70,000 patients annually at UMC, 30,000 at UPHK and is responsible for almost 50 percent of both hospital's admissions.
The Emergency Medicine Residency program at The University of Arizona in Tucson is known throughout the United States as one of the best programs out of 120+ programs in the country. The Combined Emergency Medicine/Pediatric Residency program is the only program of its kind West of the Mississippi and one of three in the country.
Emergency Medicine faculty and residents have authored more than 500 publications. Emergency Medicine faculty have also received several million dollars in grants and contracts.

Department Highlights
- University Medical Center is expanding its Emergency Department and adding inpatient beds with a new 211,000 square foot, six-story building directly north of the existing hospital. The Emergency Department will contain a 16-bed Clinical Decision Unit where emergency patients requiring observation will receive care. All three phases are scheduled to be completed early Fall 2009. - The Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center (AEMRC) at The University of Arizona, in collaboration with the University of New Mexico, will receive continued funding for the second year of a $3 million federal grant to provide bioterrorism emergency response training for healthcare providers in Arizona and New Mexico.
To read more, go to the Department News & Announcements. - The National Institute of Health (NIH) has awarded the Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center (AEMRC) at The University of Arizona a $1.5 million grant to participate in a nationwide study investigating medical interventions at the earliest phases of treatment for acute neurological disorders such as stroke, bleeding in the brain, meningitis, head injuries and seizures.
